After work today (which gets out a bit early, before the sun sets!) I will be heading to the nearby AMC theater to see the newest Lord Of The Rings film....The War Of The Rohirrim! It's been nearly a decade since I saw a new LOTR film!

Now, despite having been a huge fan of the LOTR films when they first came out, and even enjoying The Hobbit films for what they were, I am not especially "smart" when it comes to Tokien lore overall. So I'm pretty much going into this film blind. I did see the trailer for this a few months ago and the visual style will definitely be something I'll have to get used to, but I think if the music, voice acting and mood/tone of the film is done properly, it'll feel like a worthwhile entry in the LOTR series of films overall.

That being said, I don't expect it to necessarily knock my socks off. Even if it's average, I think that's likely what I'll expect of it. So my hopes aren't high like it would be if this was a live-action film with a budget ~4-5X larger (it's estimated this film has about a $30M budget overall, and VERY limited marketing). I mainly just want a good film to enjoy as I wrap up this year, and there's really nothing else I want to see in theaters for the forseeable future, so I'm going to make the most of my cinema visit today!
UPDATE: I ended up seeing it during a matinee showing (about ~6-8 total people in theater - all over 40!) and I was actually pleasantly surprised. The plot was pretty straightforward, but the pacing, characters, voice acting and story progression were well done. The stakes were low, the fan service-y stuff was limited and it didn't seem to lean too heavily into the previous films or style too much. The music score I believe saved the film more than anything else, because it gave the "mood" of a LOTR film without overpowering it. I also liked how many shots were allowed to linger on screen -- it was likely a way to save animation money but also gave the pacing/story "time to breathe." I think -- after seeing a well-made animated LOTR film -- that an animated LOTR series (or another feature film) could work.

Today marks the opening of my new personal site – ScottHobbies.Neocities.org! It's been a very, very long time since I've had a personal website such as this (for a bunch of reasons I won't get into now) and I thought I'd start up a new site where I could just post my thoughts now and then on various topics, for fun.

For quite awhile I was hesitant to get back online and post my thoughts, but over the past year or so I've decided that's it's not such a bad thing, provided I'm doing it in a way that feels enjoyable and not too ego-centric or navel-gazing, if that makes sense. I'm a homebody and keep to myself as an adult, and I think having an outlet like this (like I used to!) where I can put something I find interesting "out there" isn't such a bad thing, if I'm being honest. If it ever becomes something I get utterly wrapped up in, however, may be when I need to step back and reconsider things.
